About the Society

Our Mission

The Astronomical Society of Nevada exists to encourage, foster, conduct, and support programs on astronomy and related sciences for the education and enlightenment of the general public. We bring telescopes to the curious, share knowledge with the eager, and steward the dark skies that make Nevada one of the best places in North America to look up.

Our History

Founded in 1934, the ASN is among the oldest amateur astronomy organizations in the western United States. For nearly a century our members have gathered to share equipment, observations, and the lifelong wonder that comes from a clear sky and a good eyepiece. The Society has grown alongside the science itself — from log books and hand-ground mirrors to imaging rigs and remote observatories — but the heart of it has never changed: people who love the night sky, sharing it with anyone who’ll look up.

What We Offer

Monthly Meetings

Members meet monthly. Meetings feature guest speakers, member presentations, observing reports, and time to swap stories with people who understand why you’re up at 3 a.m. in February.

Star Parties

Public star parties at Sparks Marina invite the community to look through member telescopes — no equipment or experience required. Member-only sessions take us out to darker skies for serious observing and astrophotography.

The Asteroid

Our member newsletter delivers monthly observing guides, club news, member astrophotography, and announcements straight to your inbox. Plus access to the active ASN member discussion group.

Outreach

We support schools, scout troops, libraries, and community groups with talks, demonstrations, and observing events. If your group would like to host the ASN, please get in touch.
